Jagannath Rathyatra

Jagannath Rath Yatra is a Hindu festival that celebrates the journey of Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and his sister Goddess Subhadra. The festival takes place annually on the second day of the Odia month of Ashadha Shukla Tithi.

During the festival, devotees pull the three deities in three large wooden chariots along the grand avenue to the Gundicha Temple. The deities stay at the temple for a week and then return to the Jagannath temple.The Rathas are huge wooden structures with wheels that are built anew each year. The chariot for Jagannath is about 45 feet high and 35 feet wide, and takes about two months to construct!
