Here’s the practical, tradition-compliant approach:

1) First priority: Try to trace it

• Ask elders, check old wedding cards, purohit records, or family priests.

• Gotra matters mainly to avoid same-lineage (sapinda) marriages.

2) If still unknown → acceptable alternatives

• Assign a default gotra (commonly Kashyapa gotra) through a priest before marriage.

• Or proceed with “Ajñāta Gotra” (unknown gotra) in the sankalpa.

3) What priests actually ensure

• They focus more on:

  • Nakshatra compatibility (guna milan)

  • Sapinda / close blood relation avoidance

• Gotra is one filter, not the only safeguard.

4) Safety principle (important)

• If there is any chance of close blood relation, do not proceed until clarified—this is more critical than gotra itself.

Bottom line:
Marriage can be validly performed without known gotra, provided consanguinity is ruled out and a priest formalizes it (default or unknown gotra). Bhakti and dharma aren’t blocked by missing lineage data—but due diligence is expected.
